When I founded F.A.C.E.S. in 1988, it was because the children of Orange County desperately needed our help. Each year, in Orange County alone, 420,000 cases of child abuse are reported. We do not know how many unreported cases there are, because when a child witnesses any domestic toward mother or any member of the family, THAT is also child abuse. It is abuse that mars and impacts a child for life. In this latest death over custody we read about in September of this year, we saw what can happens when rage and abuse go unchecked. One parent’s senseless death is always one too many. When I learned of the story of “Sammie”, a young child who was present when his father killed his mother when he was being transferred between houses, We are recommitted more than ever in this unsteady times to intervene in families where children are caught in the crossfire of divorce.
Anyone who works as closely with families in crisis as we do see potential tragedies like these unfolding each day. These families may seem bound for continuous conflict, but they are not! Hope is real and it is practical.
F.A.C.E.S. provides professional counseling for children and parents caught in the crossfire of divorce and education to prevent family violence.
F.A.C.E.S. has four highly experienced licensed clinical supervision professionals and a team of 50 professionally-trained volunteers who daily meet these families’ needs at offices in Fullerton, Laguna Niguel, and Santa Ana. With assistance and direction provided at
F.A.C.E.S., family members develop the emotional and relational tools they need to move forward safely and provide safe environments for their young children.
What is unique about F.A.C.E.S.? We offer low-cost services based on each family’s ability to pay. Research shows that a greater percentage of single-parent families (57.4% in 1999) than two-parent families (6.3%) live below the poverty line.
We do, however, need financial partners like you to be able to continue to help those who need us most. As you might guess, the stresses of the economy have created more family tensions than usual. As a result, we have more families asking for our help than ever before. Tragedies will be averted thanks to our intervention and your support.
Working together we will see hearts mended and lives rebuilt.
The cornerstone of our services is the F.A.C.E.S. Family Preservation Program. We work with families to create individualized programs aimed at healing from domestic violence and other stressors. We coordinate closely with the courts and other agencies on our top priority: crisis intervention and preventing family violence.
